EMR

My applied thesis project is focused on improving the design of Electronic Medical Records. EMRs are increasingly transitioning from desktop systems to mobile devices, which offers a unique opportunity for us to rethink the design of their interfaces. Medical practitioners are currently struggling with poor EMR software solutions that focus on record keeping and accountability rather than the dynamic workflows and inter-personal relationships that occur between doctors and patients.

Through the use of surveys, observation, semi-structured interviews, and contextual inquiry, my research seeks to develop guidelines for improving the design of EMRs. My applied project will include the development of web-based prototypes based on these guidelines that will be tested by medical practitioners to evaluate the success of the proposed solutions.
